Health and community services cover several distinct study and career directions. Nursing, individual support and community services are not interchangeable qualifications. Start by deciding whether you want clinical nursing work, practical support work or a broader role helping people access services.
For international students, the important checks include course availability, practical placements and any professional registration requirements. A similar-sounding course name is not enough to establish that it leads to the role you want.
Understand the main directions
| Area | General focus | Key check |
|---|---|---|
| Nursing | Clinical knowledge, care and supervised practical learning. | Whether the specific program is approved for the registration pathway you intend. |
| Individual support | Supporting people in daily life, including ageing or disability contexts. | Specialisation, practical requirements and placement arrangements. |
| Community services | Working with individuals and communities through support services. | The units, service settings and practical work covered. |
Study Australia's health study overview describes options across several qualification levels, with communication and practical learning forming important parts of this field.
Examples to investigate
The National Training Register describes CHC33021 Certificate III in Individual Support. Examine the specialisation and chosen units in the provider's offer. A support qualification should not be described as a nursing qualification.
For nursing, compare a Diploma of Nursing and a Bachelor of Nursing in relation to the professional pathway you want. Use Ahpra's approved programs of study search to check the exact program. Ahpra explains that graduates still need to apply for registration and satisfy the other requirements; completing approved study does not automatically register you.
Do not confuse student registration during training with registration to practise after graduation. Ask the education provider to explain each stage and direct you to the relevant National Board information.
Ask detailed questions about placement
Practical experience can affect your timetable, travel and budget. Before enrolling, ask where placements may take place, how they are allocated and what happens if a placement is delayed. Clarify whether early starts, different locations or travel outside your normal campus commute may be required.
- Which checks and documents are required before attending a placement?
- Are there vaccination, screening, first aid or other site requirements?
- Who organises the placement and supervises assessment?
- What costs must you pay yourself?
- What support is available if you need to repeat a practical assessment?
The answer can differ between programs and placement sites. Get the provider's current written requirements rather than relying on another student's experience.
Choose for the responsibilities, not just the title
Think about the communication, teamwork and personal responsibility involved. Ask how the course teaches respectful interaction, privacy, boundaries and responding when a task is outside your role. Practical competence includes recognising when to seek supervision.
For a fair comparison, request a sample timetable and assessment schedule. Consider the impact of placement periods on travel and living expenses, and check whether uniforms or equipment are included in the fee.
Common questions about health courses
Does individual support qualify me as a nurse?
No. Treat support and nursing as separate pathways. If nursing is your goal, check an approved nursing program and the registration requirements that apply to you.
Can I choose a course because it guarantees a visa?
No course guarantees a visa or permanent residency. Discuss education choices with LinAs and seek qualified migration advice for your circumstances.
If your interest is exercise and coaching rather than clinical care, read our fitness and movement guide.
Before you accept an offer
Check the exact course and provider on CRICOS for study on a student visa. A national qualification listing alone does not confirm international availability. Use the Australian Government course search to investigate options, then confirm the campus, intake, duration, English requirements and complete fee schedule directly.
Ask LinAs to help you compare written offers against your goals and budget. Contact the LinAs team with your preferred subject, city, start date and previous study. For visa-specific questions, see our migration-agent referral information.
